Contemporary ceramics holds a special place in my heart. Being an applied arts graduate, ceramics was my material of choice. From that course I was taught the fundamentals of materiality, craftsmanship and design. Years have past since and even though I hadn’t started my own ceramic studio (yet), handcrafted ceramics will always be in my heart.
Over on Instagram I stumbled across the contemporary ceramics store named Yōnobi. Previously it was located in Ny Kongensgade 11, which is now where they host an array of pottery and sculpture classes. The store is now in the heart of Copenhagen in Løvstræde 1. The space is beautiful, it was designed in a way that looks like a gallery and is also a shop. Yōnobi exhibits items from various ceramic artists and it changes weekly. Now the space will look slightly different to these images and that’s exciting.
Prices. Each piece of work is priced fairly for the ceramicist/artist and store. It’s not cheap. It shouldn’t be cheap. However they are affordable, I bought a beautiful mug and I’m planning on coming back to buy a small vase. The mindset of looking for low cost items that are handcrafted needs to change. We must respect the craftsperson and they deserve to be paid fairly for their work. Yes we all like a bargain and no one wants to spend too much money on any one item. But remember these items are special and they needed to be appreciated as such. This is why I love the styling of the store, it gives each piece space to show the true beauty of handcrafted ceramics and honours the craft.
I will be back to buy a few special pieces and to take more photos of this ever evolving space.
