The new year has begun and so has the influx of new designs in my inbox. I won’t get to see most of them until I visit the Stockholm furniture fair in February. There will be a lot to see and as ever I aim to share my journey and discoveries along the way.
What has caught my eye so far is soft minimalism, in styling and also product design. I’ve selected a few items to show you what I mean. These products are refined, simple and have warmth to them. Not necessarily in colour tone but in a simplified form that is a softer kind of minimalism. Lines and curves with natural tones and subtle contrasts.
New nordic design champions Muuto have launched a lounge chair version of their modern design classic Cover chair. The Cover Lounge chair designed by Thomas Bentzen leans towards the Scandinavian traditions of crafted wooden chairs together with his contemporary expression.
The Kubus collection from By Lassen has developed so much in recent years. Mostly looking back to the original designs from Mogens Lassen in the 1960’s. Now the Lassen family have proudly continued to develop the Kubus range for modern day living. This Kubus flowerpot, designed by Søren Lassen and Sarah Abbondi, is tempting for any plant lover or even great as a bowl for storage.
When it comes to pendant lighting, opaque glass either moulded of blown, gives off a wonderfully diffused light. The new Bank pendant designed by Norm Architects for Menu does just that. The semi-circular pendant gives a soft 360-degree light. What pleases me more is that it’s paired with black power coated aluminium fittings.
Ferm Living‘s new collection for 2019 has showcased a sophisticated side to their designs. The new Arum wall lamp is wonderfully minimal with a delicate shape. Beautifully designed.
Architects and designers Space Copenhagen work on some of the coolest projects such as the original Noma and the relaunch of SAS Royal hotel etc etc. In fact they designed the Loafer SC25 , manufactured by &Tradition, for the SAS Royal hotel. A cute looking sofa with a lot of class.
Sculptural minimalist designer Kristina Dam has introduced tactile wall art for the home. Carving patterns into wood is an ancient sculptural technique. Reliefs are common to find on walls of buildings. The Relief mask made from MDF is based on this ancient way of depicting the world and in Kristina’s sculptural minimalist style.
Carsten Nielsen, a Danish creative that I’ve been following on instagram for a while now creates beautiful prints such as the Object 01 art print. “The Object 01 drawing art print is created with love to geometric lines and shapes with a mathematician’s attention. The inspiration for the lines of the organic line shapes.” – Bycdesign studio Find more of Carsten’s work and a peak into his studio on his Instagram page Bycdesignstudio
